Thomas E. Ames, 87, of Raynham, husband of Virginia (Donald) Ames, who was born in Freetown, on June 23, 1930, and died in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Brockton, on October 9, 2017.
A graduate of Durfee High School, in Fall River, Tom Served in the US Army, in Okinawa, at the end of the Korean War. After completing his military service he went on the work at the Oak Spring Dairy Farm, in East Taunton, and then worked as a warehouseman for 10 years at Western Auto, in Taunton. He retired in 1998 after working for 26 years at the Shaw’s Supermarket Warehouse, in East Bridgewater.
His pride and joy was his annual vegetable garden which was known by his relatives, friends and neighbors for producing some of the best tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and string beans to be had. He also enjoyed fishing stock-car racing and spending time with his family. Tom as a quiet friendly man with a quick wit and great sense of humor. He was a visionary with his innovative and creative repurposing of household items.
In addition to his wife Virginia, his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a son Donald Ames and a daughter Paula Ames both of Taunton and a daughter, Cindy (Ames) Stone and her husband James of Rutland, Vt. He was also the father of the late Marsha Ames. In addition, he is survived by a sister Ruth Gagne of Fall River and a brother George Ames of Acushnet and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Alfred Ames.
Visiting hours will be held from 10 AM to 12 Noon, in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., (Route 138 South), Taunton, on Saturday, October 21,2017, with a Funeral Service to follow at Noon. Interment in Pleasant Street Cemetery, Raynham.
