Irene (Lopes) Gouveia
August 31, 2017
Irene (Lopes) Gouveia, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, August 31, 2017. She was the wife of the late Antone “Pombo” Gouveia.
Born in Acushnet, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Deterra) Lopes, she was a lifelong resident of Fairhaven and communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Irene had worked as a stitcher years ago prior to raising her family.
She had many talents. As an accomplished stitcher she made many of her childrens clothes when they were young. She recorded a Country and Western song with her sister, sang on stage with Jack Soo; was an exceptional family budgeter; an archivist, presenting each child with photo albums documenting all the important events in their life. She enjoyed dancing with her husband, playing cards, LCR, BINGO, bowling, trips to Foxwoods, traveling-only by bus or train; an avid reader; loved desserts of every kind, particularly ice cream but she especially enjoyed caring for and entertaining her grandchildren with puzzles, card games, reading books and creating things with playdoh.
Most importantly, she provided the love and security that only a mother could give to her family.
She is survived by a son, Michael Gouveia and his wife Joan of Fairhaven; four daughters, Kathleen Mills and her husband Dr. Joseph Mills, DMD of Dartmouth, Susan Aiello and her late husband Lenny Aiello of Fairhaven, Janet Rusinoski and her partner Steve Silva of Swansea and Linda Gouveia of Fairhaven; five grandchildren, John and Julie Mills, Ian Aiello and Katelyn Sousa, Ginelle and Dillon Aiello; two great grandchildren, Isaiah James Aiello and Gianna Irene Aiello; a brother, Edward Lopes of Rochester; a sister, Dorothy (Lopes) Tate of Fairhaven; a sister in law, Evelyn Lopes of Fairhaven; a Godchild, Ann Bartnowski of Mattapoisett and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gouveia was the sister of the late Shirley (Lopes) Wagner, Charles Lopes, Sr. and Joseph Lopes, Jr.
A special thank you to Roger and Sue Pocze and Dr. Robert Sawyer for the kindness shown to our Mom.
In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated. A Memorial Mass to celebrate her life will be held on her birthday, Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at 10am, in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven.
